In some cases, patients are required to fast for several hours before undergoing a particular blood test. Fasting is the practice of going without food or liquids for a certain amount of time, often eight to twelve hours, before having your blood drawn.

Patients may occasionally simply need to refrain from certain foods, drinks, or substances. Patients are sometimes told to refrain from exercising, smoking, and even chewing gum. Usually, the only thing you can drink when fasting is water.
What is fasting?
When someone fasts, they abstain from food and simply sip water. If you’re fasting, you can’t eat or chew gum or candy, and you can’t drink fruit juice, soda, coffee, tea, or milk.
How does caffeine affect blood pressure?
Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, caffeine may produce a brief but significant rise in your blood pressure. What precipitates this increase in blood pressure is unknown. Each person reacts differently to coffee in terms of blood pressure.
Some studies say caffeine may disrupt a hormone that keeps your arteries wide. Others believe that coffee increases the adrenaline released by your adrenal glands, which raises your blood pressure.
The average blood pressure of certain caffeine drinkers is greater than that of non-drinkers. Others who use caffeinated drinks often get tolerant of the stimulant. Hence, caffeine doesn’t have a long-term impact on their blood pressure.
Why fast before blood tests?
The nutrients in meals and beverages enter your bloodstream, where they may alter the things being tested for and affect the findings. For example, if you consume anything before a fasting blood glucose test, your blood sugar will likely be higher than it would be if you hadn’t. Doctors can compare test results when you’re fasting to gain an accurate picture of your sugar levels over time.
What types of tests require fasting?
As was already indicated, not every test will require you to fast before it. The tests that need you to fast are listed below.
- Fasting blood glucose: This checks for diabetes or pre-diabetes by measuring the glucose level in your blood. You must fast for at least eight hours before the test.
- Lipid Profile: This test is intended to measure your cholesterol level. They will specifically check your triglycerides, good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and other fats. You will be more susceptible to heart disease or stroke if you have excessive amounts of these fats in your body. Usually, you should go between 9 and 12 hours without eating or drinking before this test.
- Basic or thorough metabolic panel: This will usually be covered in a physical routine. Several tests will be conducted to check your electrolyte and fluid balance, kidney function, liver function, and blood sugar levels. Usually, you must go between 10 and 12 hours without eating or drinking before the check-up.
- Renal function test: This test will determine how well your kidneys function. You must fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test.
- Vitamin B12 test: The level of vitamin B12 in your blood is determined by this test. It can assist the doctor in diagnosing several medical conditions, including a specific kind of anemia. Before this test, you should normally fast for six to eight hours.
- Iron test: This is done to ensure your iron levels are appropriateāneither too low nor too high. You must typically fast for 12 hours for the test.
- Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT): The results of this test will reveal how much the GGT enzyme is present in your body. A high reading may be a sign of alcohol abuse, liver problems, or issues with the bile ducts. Before the test, you could be asked to fast for at least eight hours.
Do what the doctor says
However, you should still follow your doctor’s instructions because he could be requesting tests that require fasting but hasn’t told you about them. Always adhere to your doctor’s instructions while taking any sort of test, whether it involves blood or urine. From one blood test, he could request many other kinds of testing.
