Caffeine May Aid Shift Workers to Commit Fewer Mistakes at Work

There are many interesting facts about coffee, a recent British study shows that intake of caffeine might result in fewer mistakes done by shift workers. Combined data from placebo-controlled clinical studies showed that caffeine was associated with significantly better cognitive performance, including reasoning, memory, orientation and attention, and perception, according to a report in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

A comparison of caffeine and a nap showed that study participants given caffeine made significantly fewer errors.

Drink Coffee and Enhance the Work Performance

15% of workers in the industrialised world have a shift type work or work during night which might mess up the body’s rhythm. Many with this kind of work experience health problems such as problems with falling asleep. They are often tried during their work hours and the risk to make mistakes and errors will increase.

Researchers studied data from 13 experiments where the connection between caffeine and performance of shift workers were tested. Most of the experiments were conducted in simulated work situations and the caffeine were taken as coffee, pills, energy drinks or as food with added caffeine. In some of the tests, the shift workers were tested in car driving, other was neuropsychological tests.

Caffeine Reduced the Number of Errors Done by Shift Workers

The result was that caffeine reduced the number of mistakes done by the shift workers as compared with the control group with intake of placebo …. The performance was enhanced in the neuropsychological tests which among other things focused on memory, attention and perception.

The relationship must be investigated further, however. None of the tests measured the relationship between caffeine and damage injuries directly, but the researchers believe that there may well be a connection.

– “It is reasonable to assume that there is a correlation between fewer errors and fewer injuries, although we can not put numbers on it”, the article’s lead author, Katharine Ker, which is postdoctoral. at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, in a statement.

The average age in most studies was between 20 and 30 years, and because the circadian rhythm changes with age, the researchers emphasize that there is a need for more studies in this area.
