I have been thinking about starting a coffee shop chain, but the problem is starbucks just demolishes all there competition. Is it a good idea to start a coffee chain.

Just buy into the Starbucks franchisee then. I think there fees are only about 500,000 to get started

…and they will continue to take over all other chains. However, if you begin small, here’s an idea:

There is a coffee shop downtown that has a very european feel and they stay open into the wee hours.
The women (some men) that work behind the counter are dressed very elegantly, almost gown like, and at night everyone goes there after dancing at the clubs.
They have a licquor license, so they make lots of “Irish” coffees. They have cases with full-on real deserts, not plastic processed wrapped cookies and muffins like starbucks – These are actually fresh berry- topped cheesecakes they cut in front of you.
    They have wireless internet too.

This place found the nitch and void that starbucks wasn’t fulfilling, and I’ve never been when there wasn’t a line out the door. It’s someplace real, not commercialized, homogenized & yuppy-fied.

Good luck to you and blessings.
