It would be for a non-english speaking relative – hence the need for a book with minimal text.

The subject could be anything – landscape, documentary-style, social history, vintage photography – preferably with a British theme but not necessarily.

I have thought about Ansel Adams but thats where my ideas end.

Any help appreciated!

There is a wonderful book about the creations of Hollywood costume designer Gilbert Adrian that just might be what you need.

Go to your local bookstore and check out the photography section. Especially look for:

    Galen Rowell
    Edward Weston
    Tina Mondati
    Robert Adams
Harry Benson (Celebrity, Brit, did the early shots of the Beatles)
Annie Liebowitz’s early Rolling Stone period
    Cecil Benton
    Ernst Haas
    Minor White
Timothy O’Sullivan & Alexander Gardner (Early Photography)
    Imogen Cunningham
    Ruth Bernard

ok that’s a few. Check them out at a store, hold the books, see the photos as they were intended.
